How Does Facebook Secret Crush Work? (And the Alternatives)
Entry No. 103 ·

By The IF Team
Facebook Secret Crush is a feature inside Facebook Dating, not a separate app. You choose up to nine people from your Facebook friends or Instagram followers. If one of them uses Facebook Dating, they get a notification that someone has a crush on them, but not who. If they add you to their own Secret Crush list, it is a match, and you are both told. If they never do — because they are not on Facebook Dating, never make a list, or simply do not pick you — nobody learns that you named them. It is for adults only, and only in the countries where Facebook offers Dating.
Wanting a safety net before you say something that matters is not cowardice, and you are far from alone in looking for one. But almost everything written about Secret Crush dates from its 2019 launch. This guide covers what those articles leave out: whether you can still use it, whether crush apps are safe, and what else does the job — including IF, the dating app we built for saying how you feel whatever the timing, even when one of you is in a relationship.
How Secret Crush works, step by step
Facebook announced Secret Crush in 2019 as part of Facebook Dating, the service that runs inside the main Facebook app. Facebook’s Help Centre sets out how crushes work. In outline:
- You opt in to Facebook Dating and create a Dating profile, which is kept separate from your main Facebook profile.
- You add up to nine crushes, chosen from your Facebook friends or, if your Instagram account is connected, from the people who follow you there.
- If a crush has a Facebook Dating profile, they are told that someone has a crush on them. They are not told who.
- If they add you to their own list, it is a match. You are both notified, and you can start talking inside Facebook Dating.
- If they do not add you, or are not on Dating at all, nothing is revealed. Your name stays on your list and nowhere else.
One detail explains why the feature exists. Facebook Dating keeps your Facebook friends out of the people it suggests to you, so Secret Crush is the one way to match with a Facebook friend there.
What your crush actually sees
The notification is the part people forget. A crush who uses Facebook Dating learns that someone has added them — and since only friends and followers can be added, that means someone they know. People solve mysteries by guessing, and in a close group of friends, or an office where everyone follows everyone, the guess may land on you, or on somebody else entirely. Only name people you would be comfortable having work it out.
What a match tells you, and what silence does not
A match tells you one thing: you both put each other on a list. A missing match tells you nothing. Your crush may not use Facebook Dating, may never have opened Secret Crush, or may feel differently, and from the outside those look identical. That is kind, and it is also the format’s limit: a list can only ever say yes.
Is Secret Crush still available?
It depends on your account, and you can check in two minutes. Secret Crush exists only inside Facebook Dating, which Facebook offers in some countries and not others. Meta was still adding to Dating in September 2025, with Meet Cute, a weekly surprise match, and an AI dating assistant, but Secret Crush has had little attention since 2019. So check for yourself rather than trust any article, this one included. As of September 2026, this is the quickest test:
- Open the Facebook app and look for Dating in the menu. If it is not there, Facebook Dating is not offered to you, usually because of where you live or because your account does not meet its rules, which include being 18 or over.
- If Dating is there, open it and set up or open your Dating profile.
- Look among Dating’s options for Secret Crush (Facebook’s Help Centre calls it sending “crushes”). If you can see it, it is available to you. If you cannot, it is not offered on your account, whatever older articles say.
Then comes the question that matters more: is your crush on Facebook Dating? Secret Crush can only match two people who both use it. If the person you like has never opened Dating, nothing happens.
Is there an Instagram secret crush?
Not as a separate feature. The Instagram connection runs through Facebook Dating: when Dating launched in the US in September 2019, Secret Crush was extended to Instagram followers, so you can add someone who follows you on Instagram even if you are not friends on Facebook. The list still lives in Facebook Dating, and a match still needs your crush to have a Dating profile and to add you back.
As of September 2026, Instagram does not run a crush list of its own. If Instagram is where you and your crush actually talk, use it the ordinary way — a reply to a story, a message with your name on it — as we cover in how to confess to your crush on Instagram. And if the timing is wrong for a message like that, you can address an IF to an Instagram handle they shared with you. IF sends nothing to Instagram; your IF waits, sealed, until you are both single.
Why mutual-crush tools appeal, and where they stop
The appeal of a mutual match is that nobody has to be turned down, and that matters on both sides. In a classic study of unrequited love, the people who had been pursued often felt guilty and had no script for saying no, while their admirers looked back on real highs as well as heartbreak and humiliation. A system that reveals names only when both people say yes spares everyone that scene. An IF spares it too, in its own way: once it reveals, if they decline, you are not told — it simply leaves your list.
The scene you are insuring against may also be milder than you fear. Across several studies, people underestimated how much the other person liked them after a conversation. That is not proof your crush feels the same, but it suggests a list is not the only safe option. And the format has real limits, one of them deliberate:
- It only works if you are both on the same service, and both happen to open the same feature.
- It only reaches people you are already connected to. That one is a safeguard, not a flaw: if someone has not connected with you or given you their details, no app should be your way to them.
- It carries no words. A match says you both ticked a box, not what you feel or why.
- It has nothing to offer when the feeling is right and the timing is not.
Mutual and anonymous crush apps, and whether they are safe
Secret Crush sits inside a large, adults-only service with rules about who you can add. Most other mutual-crush apps you can install are small, and many are not built for adults at all. Search for “anonymous crush apps” and you will also find apps for sending unsigned messages, which are a different thing altogether: words nobody has to stand behind. Before you give any crush app your name — or anyone else’s — check:
- Who it is for. Choose one built for adults, with an adults-only rule it states plainly.
- What it asks for. Many want to upload your contact book, which means handing over other people’s numbers without asking them.
- What the other person is told, and whether it ever names you. Read exactly what lands on their phone before you add anyone.
- Whether strangers can message you without a name. Messages nobody has to sign are the easiest to misuse.
- Whether it sells hints about who sent an unsigned message, which breaks the promise made to the sender.
- Whether you can delete your list, and the names you gave it.
One rule holds on every app: only add people who have shared their details with you themselves, and if the answer is no, or they ask for space, stop. If someone is using a crush or messaging app to bother you, block and report them in the app.
On the points that matter most here, IF is strictly for adults aged 18 and over, moderates photos and text, puts Report and Block on every profile you can identify, and reviews every report within 24 hours. There is an optional selfie verification badge, and turning off Discoverable in Search means anyone searching your email, phone or handle sees nothing. And nobody ever reads an IF without seeing who sent it: the reveal shows your profile and your words together.
Secret Crush alternatives, by situation
The right alternative depends less on the app than on where you and your crush stand. These are situations, not rankings.
If you are both single and see each other anyway
You may not need a tool at all. One specific invitation — “there’s a new ramen place near the office, want to try it on Friday?” — gets you an answer a list never will. Our guide to telling someone you like them covers timing, wording and reading the room.
If you want to hint before you say it
A hint with your name on it, or a single unsigned note with a planned reveal, gives you a little distance without leaving anyone guessing for ever. We walk through each in how to tell your crush you like them secretly. And if one of you is in a relationship, an IF is that note with the reveal built in: your own words, sealed until you are both single.
If you are both on a dating app
Then you already have a mutual-crush tool. On most dating apps, a conversation opens only when both people say yes, so if your crush turns up in your deck, a like does the job Secret Crush does. As with a crush list, an unreturned like tells you nothing either way, so hold it lightly. On IF you do not have to wait for them to turn up in your deck: if you are both single, you can find them by Search with an email, phone number or Instagram handle they gave you, and send a Like. Nobody is notified when you search.
If your crush is in a relationship
Here a crush list fits least: if they add you back, it opens a conversation inside their relationship today. Your feelings are no less honest for the timing. You can tell them, and our guide to telling someone who is taken how you feel weighs when that is worth it, but opening up like that has real risks. You are potentially better off sending an IF: no conversation can open while either of you is in a relationship, and it asks nothing of them now. They may be told an IF is waiting, but never who sent it or what it says. And if the timing ever lines up, you are already there to show them how much you have always liked them.
If you are the one in a relationship
A crush while you are with someone is a feeling, not a betrayal; the only lines are cheating and lying. A crush list is built to open a conversation today; IF never opens one while either of you is with someone. Having IF on your phone is not cheating, and you can send an IF honestly whatever you feel about your relationship, because nothing opens until you are both single.
IF vs Facebook Secret Crush
A disclosure first: IF is our app, so read this as a description rather than a ranking. IF is a dating app for everyone, single or in a relationship, where your relationship status changes what you can do. It is not a mutual-crush app.
If you are both single and your crush is on IF, the answer is a Like, as on any dating app, and an accepted Like opens a chat. Unlike an IF, a Like is not sealed: members on paid plans can see who has liked them.
Where IF differs is timing: Secret Crush is built around who you already know, IF around when. No conversation ever opens on IF while either of you is in a relationship. If either of you is, the only thing you can send is an IF: a private, sealed message of up to 250 characters that opens only once you are both single. Side by side:
- Who you can reach. Secret Crush: up to nine Facebook friends or Instagram followers who use Facebook Dating. IF: people you find by Swipe, or by Search with an email address, phone number or Instagram handle they gave you themselves.
- What they are told. Secret Crush: that someone has a crush on them, if they use Dating. IF: if they are on IF, they may get a push notification or an email saying “You received an IF” — never who sent it or what it says until it is revealed.
- What they read. Secret Crush: nothing but a match. IF: your own words and profile, when it reveals.
- What opens it. Secret Crush: both of you adding each other. IF: both of you being single. If they become single while you are single, you get 24 hours to reveal it, or you can let it lapse and stay hidden for good. If you are the one in a relationship and they are single, it reveals when you change your own status to single. Then they choose whether to accept, and accepting opens a chat.
- If they are not on the app. Secret Crush: nothing happens. IF: an IF sent to an email address triggers one short invitation with a one-click unsubscribe, while one sent to a phone number or Instagram handle sends nothing at all and waits in case they join.
Three things are worth stating plainly. IF never discloses who sent an IF before a reveal, but people can still guess from context. The person you send it to can delete it at any time, so it waits until you are both single or until they clear it. And status on IF is self-declared, so IF cannot tell you whether someone is really single. How an IF works in every situation has the full detail.
Where IF fits
Most crushes are more complicated than a yes-or-no list: the friend who has been with someone since university, the colleague who is engaged, the person you met at exactly the wrong moment. Those feelings are normal and honest, nothing to hide from anyone, and a crush list has nowhere to put them. IF does.
An IF lets you say it now, even something as simple as “I have liked you for a long time, and if the timing is ever right, I would love to see where it goes.” It stays sealed while either of you is in a relationship, and no conversation can open, so it makes no demands on what they have built, or on what you have. It works as a release valve: the feeling has been said, and it no longer has to circle in your head. They may be told an IF is waiting; knowing that, the choice is yours.
Your first IF is free, and how to send the perfect IF will help you find the words. Writing one takes a little courage, and that is rather the point: an IF is you being emotionally brave on your own terms. Say it once, mean every word, and keep living your life while it waits. If the timing ever lines up, it may lead you to where you were meant to be all along.
Questions people ask
Does Secret Crush tell your crush that you like them?
Not by name. If your crush uses Facebook Dating, they are told that someone has a crush on them, but not who. Your name is revealed only if they add you to their own list.
Someone has a crush on me on Facebook Dating. How do I find out who?
Facebook does not tell you. A name is revealed only by a match: if you add that person to your own Secret Crush list and they have added you too. Add only people you would genuinely like to hear from — adding friends one by one to solve the mystery can create a match you did not want.
Can my Facebook friends see me on Facebook Dating?
Not as a suggestion. Facebook says your Dating profile is not shared outside Dating, and Dating does not suggest your Facebook friends to you as matches, or you to them. Secret Crush is the exception: a friend you add is told that someone has a crush on them.
Is there an app like Facebook Secret Crush?
Most dating apps run on the same mutual-yes logic: a like opens a conversation only when it is returned. IF works that way between singles, and adds what a crush list lacks: timing. When either of you is in a relationship, you can send an IF, a sealed message that opens only once you are both single, so whenever the timing comes right, you are already there.
What is the best app to find out if your crush likes you?
No app can tell you what someone feels; a mutual-match tool only tells you when you both say so on the same service. If you see your crush anyway, a plain, kind question is still the most reliable test there is. If the timing is what is wrong, an IF lets you say it anyway and be there when it can be answered.
A crush list can only confirm a feeling that is already mutual; an IF says yours now. Right person, wrong time? Wait for them on IF.
